What Home Gym Essentials Do You Need?

February 04, 2022

A home gym can be a great option if you made a New Year's resolution to go to the gym more often but can't seem to fit it into your routine. Many people simply prefer the convenience of having a dedicated gym space at home. Whatever your reasons and fitness goals are, you can create a great workout space, even on a budget. Here's how to figure out what home gym essentials you need for your ultimate fitness routine.

Table of Contents

Consider Your Fitness Goals

It’s important to know your fitness goals before determining what equipment you should get for your home gym. Are you exercising to meet a target weight or are you training for a marathon? Knowing your goal can help you narrow down the types of exercises you’ll enjoy. Your home exercise equipment needs to center around your goal.

If your goal is to tone up for summer, your at-home workouts will be a little different than if you're training for a marathon. Set your fitness goals first, then start building your gym with those goals in mind.

Weights

One of the best ways you can build muscle and keep it toned is by weightlifting. If you’re a beginner and can only lift very light weights, you don't need to invest in a pricey set of dumbbells. Instead, purchase a couple of lighter weights in varying sizes. Start with a 3lb, 5lb, and 8lb set and progress from there.

For more experienced lifters, you’ll want heavier dumbbells. You’ll likely pay more for a set of dumbbells that spans a variety of weights, but they should last you a long time. You can also look into adjustable dumbbells as well. Add in a kettlebell, and you’ll be able to add squats and shoulder exercises.

Cardio Equipment

For cardio-related goals, you may want to invest in equipment such as a treadmills, spin bike, or elliptical machine. Just keep in mind the cost of these investments. Before purchasing, ensure whatever equipment you buy will be put to regular use—rather than become a glorified clothes hanger.

If you are stocking your home gym on a budget, you can often find a bargain on used cardio equipment. Don't have the budget for a piece of cardio equipment? You can always hit cardio with a jump rope or go for a run.

Home Gym Basics

There are a few basic things that every home gym needs. These are all fairly inexpensive items that you can pick up at your local sporting goods store or buy online.

Exercise or Yoga Mat

A mat can make floor or ab exercises more comfortable. It's also useful for stretching.

Resistance Bands

Bands are available in a range of thicknesses, making them very versatile for adding resistance to a variety of exercises. They're also cheap enough that you can get a range of bands to use for different muscle groups.

Stability Ball

Stability balls are great for strengthening your core. You'll never get bored with so many ways to use this simple piece of gym equipment.

Bench or Box

For certain exercises, you may want to elevate yourself on a stable platform. You can also use it for step-ups, triceps dips, and more.

Jump Rope

Jumping rope is a great cardio exercise that doesn’t require running. Plus, it takes up almost no space in your home gym.

Optional Gym Equipment

While weights and cardio equipment will be the bulk of your essentials, there are other pieces that you might want to consider adding to your home gym.

Foam Roller

A foam roller which can provide relief for sore muscles after workouts. There are several different types of foam rollers you can choose from.

Fan

It’s also a good idea to purchase a fan to help keep you cool during strenuous workouts.

Mirror

You may also want to check out your form while exercising, so consider adding a full-length mirror to your list of essentials. A mirror makes checking your form and technique easier.

Dry Erase Board

One last item that can be helpful is a dry erase board or a chalkboard to keep track of your workouts.
